2021 IBHRE Day Centers on the Importance of Leading with Excellence.

WASHINGTON, DC, January 22, 2021—Today, the International Board of Heart Rhythm Examiners (IBHRE) announced two new initiatives to be launched on Feb. 8, to coincide with IBHRE Day—an annual celebration of IBHRE-certified practitioners in the field of heart rhythm management. In response to the professional development needs of cardiac arrhythmia health care professionals, IBHRE has expanded its offerings to promote competency and lifelong learning through certification among professionals who are growing their skills and knowledge in the field.  These initiatives are aimed at encouraging the pursuit of career development opportunities among professionals at all levels, particularly professionals in the entry and developmental stages of their careers.

Specifically, on IBHRE Day, the Board will open registration for a new certification exam, the Cardiac Device Remote Monitoring Specialist (CDRMS), which will enable certification candidates to validate their knowledge and competency in remote patient monitoring. In addition, IBHRE has partnered with Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI) to provide a certification pathway for allied health professionals who want to pursue advanced certification in electrophysiology (EP).

The Cardiac Device Remote Monitoring Specialist (CDRMS)

The Cardiac Device Remote Monitoring Specialist (CDRMS) certification program develops a global standard and verifies competencies of practitioners who monitor cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDS).

In launching the CDRMS certification, Dr. Charles J. Love, IBHRE president and director of Cardiac Rhythm Device Services at Johns Hopkins Hospital explained that, “As the adoption of RPM continues to increase, IBHRE determined that there was indeed a growing need for a global standard that outlines the skills and competencies required by practitioners who specialize in remote monitoring of CIEDs. Consequently, the launch of the CDRMS is quite timely as it comes at a time when RPM has become a rapidly growing and essential component of our healthcare delivery system,” Love added.

According to a survey conducted by the health insurance industry, the COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a surge in patient demand for telemedicine and RPM, with virtual physician visits increasing by 300% among older patients since March of 2020.

The IBHRE-CCI EP Certification Pathway

To promote higher professional achievement among allied health professionals, IBHRE has partnered with CCI to encourage EP specialists to pursue advanced certification through the IBHRE-CCI EP Certification Pathway, a process that helps professionals achieve career advancement.

In referencing the new partnership, CCI President Gail Size, BS, RPhS, RVS, RVT, FSVU, said, "We are extremely excited about our strategic collaboration with IBHRE to communicate the value of certification and outline the professional continuum for EP professionals. This collaboration will also serve to promote the vital role that credentialed EP professionals play in the delivery of quality patient care received from qualified professionals."

CCI’s certification programs enable allied health professionals at the entry and developmental stages of their careers to demonstrate an intermediate level of knowledge in electrophysiology.  These individuals earn the Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist (RCES) and/or the Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS) credential. RCES- and RCIS-certified professionals meet IBHRE’s criteria to sit for the Cardiac Electrophysiology Examination and the Cardiac Device Examination; and hence, are eligible to pursue IBHRE’s Certified Cardiac Device Specialist (CCDS) and the Certified Electrophysiology Specialist (CEPS) certifications.
